ALL ABOUT FINE JEWELRY
Precious and Semiprecious Stones

There are four precious stones: diamonds, rubies, emeralds and sapphires.

A semiprecious stone is any other stone that has value. The term "semiprecious" is misleading because it implies they are less valuable than precious ones. However a truly high quality topaz or tourmaline, for instance, can be worth more than a mediocre ruby or emerald.

Some examples of semiprecious stones:
-Agate, which comes in several colors, sometimes dyed to enhance the color, which doesn't change its value.
-Quartz, which includes amethyst, citrine, aventurine, and rock crystal.
-Garnet, a very plentiful stone, which makes it reasonably priced.
-Jade, which some think should be in the precious stone category.
-Lapis Lazuli, indigo blue with flecks of pyrite that shine like nuggets of gold or silver.
-Jasper, an opaque variety of quartz that can be highly polished like marble.
